'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' Stars Hold Out Hope For Big-Screen Resurrection

'Because we already were a movie that wasn't successful, I think it makes it that much tougher for us to go out there,' Sarah Michelle Gellar says of original 'Buffy' flick.

By Jennifer Vineyard, with additional reporting by Matt Elias Digg Newsvine Send to Friend Print You Tell Us

If the "Buffy" boys have their say, any future big-screen adaptation of the movie-turned-TV show-turned comic book would have to feature the recent events of the "Season Eight" comic books — in which the vampire slayer gets some girl-on-girl action — as a jumping-off point.

"I don't know if Sarah [Michelle Gellar] wants to be kissing girls, so for Sarah's sake, we'd say, start from the TV show," said Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander. "But I think for everyone else, start from the comic book. I want to see Sarah kissing girls."

As the original "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" cast and creators gathered for a reunion Thursday for the first time in four years, talk of a possible movie was in the air — even if no script or studio was in place "as far as we know," said Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia. "No one's been formally asked to do it, but I'm sure it would be very popular."

After all, no one was expecting a show that was intended as "a midseason replacement on a network no one had heard of, based on a movie that wasn't ... all that," as Gellar put it, to take off like it did. But being a success despite everything could actually count against them in the end, she pointed out. "We have two strikes against us," she told MTV News. "Because we already were a movie that wasn't successful, I think it makes it that much tougher for us to go out there. One of the reasons that the show succeeded [where the original movie did not] was that it wasn't a two-hour story, but a story you have to develop over time."

Still, the cast has faith in show creator Joss Whedon to come up with a script that delivers. "I'd sign up for him reading the phone book, he's that good," said Emma Caufield, who played Anya.

So what loose ends would the cast like to see developed should there be a two-hour version? Most of the actors wanted to see their characters resurrected — literally.

"I'd like to come back from heaven, obviously, so I can have a part," laughed Carpenter, whose character had moved on to a higher plane on the spinoff "Angel." "Otherwise, I'd want Angel and Buffy to be together and Buffy and Cordelia to finally be friends."

"I'd like to see Joyce [played by Kristine Sutherland] come back," said Amber Benson, who played Tara. "Have the mom return. And I'd like to see the Tara/Willow stuff regenerate."

"I think most of the characters on the show have died and come back," said Caufield, "so I would think Joss would come up with a creative way to resurrect them, to incorporate that aspect. I mean, Anya just died — an ax, and you're cut in half, and there it is, no period for mourning. I'd like her to be singing somewhere, since Joss is very talented at writing musicals. Maybe they can all burst into song, in a war-torn country or something."

Besides having more songs, there were also votes for more action. "I would like to fight a little more," said Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Dawn. "I say that only because bikini season is coming up, and I got to train. I don't like to work out, but if I have to do it for work, I can."

"There should be bigger snakes," Brendon said. "Next time, if [Buffy] could fight a snake the size of Nevada, that would be great. More guns, less sex. Isn't that what America's about?"

Wait — wasn't he the guy cheering Buffy's lesbian romance? Perhaps that should be "more guns, more sex." And if Buffy's allowed a "little lady-loving action," as Tom Lenk, who played Andrew, put it, couldn't Andrew finally be allowed some action as well? "It became a running joke, the question of his sexual preference," Lenk said. "Sort of how you never saw the guy's face on 'Home Improvement' or never saw Karen Walker's husband on 'Will & Grace.' And it might be nice to see him hook up one way or the other, to make some decisions for Andrew in that department. To just say [whether he's straight or gay]."

That all depends on whether the movie would pick up after the TV show ended or after the events of the comic book. "It would be cool to see what happens directly when the TV show ends, when they drive off on the bus," Lenk said, "because the comic book picks up after awhile. I'd like to see how they start building that network of slayers."

A lot of fans would too, and that fan pressure would be key to making it happen, predicted Seth Green, who played Oz. "You saw 'Serenity' get made" as a movie, after initially airing as Whedon's TV show "Firefly," said Green. "If the fans were excited enough, it's possible."

As Whedon said on the panel, "many stars" would have to align — not the least of which would be a certain lead actress wanting to participate. "But if I had to shoot down everything that we're doing in the comics because we're doing a film," Whedon said, "I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over it."

**Roush asked Whedon if he had any plans for a Broadway musical after the success of "Once More, With Feeling." Joss said he would love to do a Buffy musical but he would not expand on his musical episode. He would just start from scratch. When the cast was asked if they would go to Broadway with Whedon, all but Gellar raised their hands.

**When asked "Angel or Spike?," Sarah Michelle said, "Well, he's sitting on stage," and pointed to James Marsters.

~Squick!~ Although, I don't hear her say that at all...listen here at around the 21 minute mark and you let me know:
The bitch screaming is insanely grating throughout the entire recording.

Red carpet interview from Paley Fest - Charisma Carpenter

I think what she's trying to say here is not that she thinks Cordy/Angel should've hooked up, but that she wants to bang Boreanaz!

Also, what a shame that these actors clearly did not know that Eliza and Alyson weren't going to show until Ausiello told them. Amber Benson pitched a fit and CC here seems to think Eliza is hanging around.

Red carpet interview from Paley Fest - Michelle Trachtenberg

Wooden Spike? It's called a stake, ya twit. Also, how come no one says "The Gift" is their fave ep? I would think that MT would love that one.

Red carpet interview from Paley Fest - Amber Benson

Red carpet interview from Paley Fest - Nicholas Brendon

Is it possible that I dislike him even more than Xander? Also someone is definitely, without a doubt, skiing the slopes that night (if you know what I mean.)

kinda strange....

Ooh, red carpet interview videos from Paley Fest

Alyson Hannigan Interview

I thought this was a cool little interview (linked from the other page Michelle sent.) I mean, I wish we weren't so privy to the info that essentialy: no cast member has a clue what their character is doing in the comic...but I guess that's really asking too much from these prissy bitches anyway, right? Check it out:

What's up with this guy?

Seriously, I listened to the whole Paley Fest audio last night and after giving it a while to sink in I now realize that it was actually quite boring. Like way, way more boring than it should've been. I don't know if it's b/c Alyson Hannigan and Eliza Dushku were missing. I don't know if it's because the thing only lasted an hour and they were forced to sit through OMWF. I mean, it's a fabulous ep and all, but trust us, we've seen it. I think a clips reel with some never seen before bloopers or something would've been more fun. Anyway, I'm thinking this Buffy Reunion was a bust. Good thing we didn't splurge on going b/c I think we would've felt a little disappointed.

Memo to Tom Lenk

Some dudes, no matter how gay, just can't be girls. Chris Crocker you are not, sir. Your sentiment re: leaving Diablo Cody alone, however? Ku-dos.

::gay golf claps all around::

ok, things are starting to pour in...

I think I think AH and Eliza D didn't show. Hmm... Boo to no movie announcement :(

oooh, and guess what? No DB taped message.

**Update, here is a link to an MP3 Live Recording of Paley Fest

What's going on at the Paley Fest you ask?

Well yeah, me too! Since there is no news yet I'm assuming it's not over? It started at 7 (10 our time.) I think it should be over...where's the news dammit?! (Matter of fact, the only news I'm seeing at all is that Trachtenberg is going to be on Gossip Girl.)Also, the Futon Critic is supposedly live-blogging but nothing yet over there either. Here's the link to that:

Hi, this is David Bushman, curator with the Paley Center. First, I want to thank all of you for your comments and questions. The quality of the questions is really impressive, and we will be forwarding many of them to the moderator, though of course time constraints will make it impossible for him to ask all of them. I also wanted to address some of the issues raised above: Unfortunately, we are NOT able to stream “Buffy” live, for numerous reasons, all of which are logisitical. Bummer, I know. To Nick from Toronto, that’s great that you’re making the trek to LA for this event. We admire your passion! Lastly, it sounds like there’s a lot of sentiment out there for Buffy and Angel, vs. Buffy and Spike. What about Willow — Oz or Tara? And Xander — Cordelia or Anya?

Hi David- Thanks for reading up on the fan comments! Its nice to know when we’re heard! I actually emailed my questions to the moderator a while back already, but since you kindly addressed some of the other questions, I was wondering if there’s a possibility that the Buffy event will be available as a DVD later on?

Yes, Christine, definitely a chance this event will be available on DVD. Stay tuned…

And while we're at it...

I was Mal, here. Funny, I thought I'd be Inara but I guess it's b/c I'm not that slutty. Heh. Anywho, Jen I know you haven't watched Firefly yet and I think it's time to put it on the Netflix. Don't worry it's only 13 episodes and a movie.

Click on the link above to see which Firefly character you are.

I don't think this is the same as the other quiz we did

Don't ask how I became Xander of all things. Something about being loyal to my friends and family or someshit. I think I was Buffy last time and Michelle was Xander (hee!) Let's see how you all fare with this one. Click on the link above.

Paley Fest Questions

Ok guys, me and Tee came up with a few questions for the moderator to ask Joss at Paley Fest. Please let us know if there's anything you want to add to this list via the Buffy forum under the Blog section. Here's the questions:

When is the movie coming out?

Was the ending in “Chosen” always Joss’s original intension since the show's inception?

Since both Willow and Faith knew about Conner (before the mind wipe) does that mean Buffy knows that Angel has a son?

In Season 7, you said that the slayer line runs through Buffy, when we were told from Season 2 that it runs through Kendra now? Continuity error or are we missing something?

Right before Angel comes back from hell and lands on the mansion floor, Buffy places her claddagh ring down in that exact spot. Did she have something to do with his return or was it just coincidence?

Oh my goodness

This interview is a doozy. First of all, he talks about how season 9 will be years from now. And also, he throws in this little tidbit:

NRAMA: Clearly, Buffy’s had this boomerang effect with you over the span of your professional career. Do you see it as something that you’ll ever be able to quit or write the final sentence?

JW: Apparently not. I’m interested in all the exciting new things that are happening, but there she is, at my side. And I’m pretty okay with that.

I created her 20 years ago when I first got out of college. It took me a long time to write the screenplay, and then, obviously, a long time to see the screenplay turn into a movie, and then a longer time for a movie to turn into a series. It’s been with me all the time. I like her. I like her world, and I’m not tired of it. I’m always going to be excited about my new stuff, and always will be, but she’s an old friend. I don’t have a lot of those.
